Worn Out Welcome

Unfortunately gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) has decided to be a visitor in our house again, and I can already say he's definitely worn out his welcome. Nolan suffered from reflux very early on, but the day the Dr. McG started him on Axid he was a completely happy baby again...feeding time became bonding time rather than frustrating and helpless feeling. I know I've already said how different things have been with Parker than Nolan and this is another instance. At his one month well baby we were put on Axid again with the hope that it'd have the same quick results. Dr. McG wanted us to give him a call in a week to let him know if we'd seen improvement because the last thing he wanted was for the reflux to start tampering with his eating habits and messing up his incredible sleeping patterns. A week later, we found ourselves calling with the news that it wasn't working. No problem, they'll just put him on Prevacid. However, the next part blew me away - it's a capsule that I needed to give him 1/2 of on a teeny tiny amount of baby applesauce. We gently reminded them that Parker is only 7 weeks old and they said they do it all the time...but again, a very, very minimal amount (basically just enough to hold the 1/2 capsule). Of course, Parker LOVES it and I have to admit, I LOVE my ped, but I'm still not thrilled on the idea of applesauce this early on. Plus, here we are over a week later and still having problems. It seemed to help a lot the first couple of days, but we're back to square one and waiting to call the dr. on Tuesday morning. So far, his eating habits aren't too affected yet, nor is his sleeping at night. Daytime has been a little hit and miss and during those times it's very evident he's hurting...classic back arching, uncomfortable, and crying. Hopefully we'll find a solution soon. But, I do still count my blessings as there are much worse things that could be going on. I cannot believe how fast time is going by & I dread thinking about the days going by and school starting again on August 11th. Seriously, what happened to closer to September school?!

  1. Oh, no, I hate to hear that about Parker! I hope they find something to work with him. I would feel cautious about the applesauce too.
And I can't believe school starts that early.... where does the summer go?!

  2. Thanks, Darreth. We have an appointment tomorrow morning at 8 with a pediatric GI specialist at Cardinal Glennon. Keep your fingers crossed for us!
