"Everywhere people live they make garbage and trash. In the United States they make a billion pounds a day. But nobody wants garbage and trash. Everybody wants to get rid of it." - Where Does The Garbage Go? by Paul Showers
Today is Earth Day. Although today is a very important day for our planet and the future of our children everyday should be considered "Earth Day." Unfortunately, it wasn't until I had a child of my very own that I started to realize the true importance and significance of this day. Global warming is slowly, but surely taking place and the overall condition of our environment is deteriorating with each passing day. If we don't care enough to take care of our planet, what will the future be like for our children and their children? I cannot begin to tell you how saddening it was being at the zoo over the weekend and not being able to show my son the polar bears, just an empty exhibit. (The last one died at the end of March, click here to read about it). It breaks my heart to think that he may never even know what one is. Only about 25,000 polar bears are left in the wild today.
My next attempt to pursuade you to begin going green 365 days vs. 1 day is also on behalf of my child, my family & friend's children, & my students. As global warming continues causing the Earth to warm and oceans to rise at rapid rates, aside from the harm to animals, a new threat is occuring...disease. The germs and viruses that make us (namely, our children) sick are less of a concern when the winters and nights are colder. This is also why it's more important that we get our children vaccinated, and not just vaccinated, but also ON TIME, EVERY TIME! However, this is a whole other issue that I'll save for a later date! Besides, I'm most likely preaching to the choir on that one.
My plea is for everyone to start taking an active part in making our environment a healthier, prettier, & safer place for our future. You might ask how...and so, here are a few simple things we could all do daily/weekly to help:
-RECYCLE
-Switch to energy efficient light bulbs (CFL's) whenever possible
-Wash clothes in cold water
-Use reusable bags when shopping (there are some much nicer looking ones than there used to be)
-Look for green household cleaners (we like seventh generation)
-Don't leave the water running while brushing your teeth
-Use a reusable water bottle (also beneficial to your overall health)

First of all, I love the collage you made. You are so creative! Second of all, I like how you are so passionate about the earth :) It's refreshing to hear that somebody cares so much, although I must admit that I don't do all I should. Lastly, I couldn't agree with you more about the vaccinations. Working in healthcare, I know how critical it is that children are vaccinated. With you working with children every day, I'm know you see the importance in it also. Good Blog!!!
