What's in a Name?

"Chrysanthemum did not think her name was absolutely perfect. She knew it."

The above quotation comes from one of my (many) very favorite children's books, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. While it's true that I have many favorites in the children's literature category (c'mon, look at my profession), this one just stands out to me and I never fail to read it several times a school year to my big 4th graders. The first couple of times they hear it, they kind of giggle about it, but by the end of the year...they're usually asking me to reread it and have taken in some of the meaning of the story.

So...if it isn't obvious why I'm blogging about this, then here's why: We may not ever decide upon a boy name for this kicking, squirming, & growing child in my womb :) Okay, just kidding...I know that we will and we have quite a list (which is getting narrowed down faster & faster with each passing day), but it was just so easy with Nolan. With him, we had one boy name only without any other considerations. If he turned out to be a boy it was Nolan Alan. The first name came from just a name that I've always loved, and Brian agreed the second he heard it, and Alan is both of our father's middle names. The girl name even came relatively easy as well...it was between Avery & Paityn, and shortly before L & D we'd decided upon Avery for sure.

This time things are different.

We've had our girl name set since we basically had Nolan - and it's not even the names that we'd decided upon for him if he came out a girl. But, on the otherhand, a boy name is something else. So, I know many people's response is that I should have just found out what we're having, so then I'd know whether this heavy decision is even a valid one. BUT...I would simply have it no other way than a surprise. There are no words to explain that feeling of adrenaline rushing after delivery and the anticipation of waiting to hear your husband tell you what has just entered your life. It seems all too often the surprises we receive in life aren't necessarily good, hopeful ones...they're life altering and sometimes shattering. Of course, it's overwhelming happiness at the arrival of any new baby, but anymore it seems that the sex is determined, the name is set, & the only element of surprise left is the appearance of the new little one itself (and even that's starting to fade with the advances in technology like my last ultrasound, the 4-D ones...especially if you have one even later in pregnancy).

So, my question isn't what should we name our baby-to-be, but instead how did you decide upon your child's name? I know I have many people that read my blog without "following" it, and many that don't comment on here, but rather send me emails in response. However, I just thought it'd be interesting to get the story on how you were named or how you named your own. After all, it is quite a decision. I do think it's safe to say that we're probably 85% sure of our boy name as of last night, but we still have some pondering to do. Trust me, it's not easy when both parents are educators...with that field comes a handful of tainted names names that remind you of various children you've had year-to-year.

Go ahead, leave a comment and send some inspiration my way! :)

  1. First of all, I had no idea we stole your baby name! Oops! Second, I think it's funny that we have the same name & picked the same name for our girls. It's funny how things work out!
Ok, how we picked her name. Her middle name, Gayle, was the special part. My Grandpa's name was Gale, my Mom's name is Gaila & my middle name is Gail. Growing up I always thought my baby would be Abigail to carry on the tradition. But, when the time actually came, we decided against Abby. We decided to change the spelling & have it as the middle name. After that we just had to decide on an A name (since we are both A's) that went well with Gayle.
    Happy name hunting!!

  2. Mandy,
I wish I had a touching story to go along with Morgan's first name, but it was just the first name we both agreed on! Haha
Her middle name is a combination of our precious angel's name which was Brooke Lynn which we combined and shortened to Brooklyn:)
    Sorry I'm not much help!

  3. mandarin,
i love to read through your blogs! your heart and passion for you family shines through your every word. :)
names for our little ones are so important. definitely more to it then throwing a dart at a list of names! one thing Mike and I wanted for each of our children was to have each of them carry a family name. Mabry Rese after my mom, Kamry Beth Danielle after my brother and sister and this next bundle of joy after daddy...boy or girl. Mike was named after his dad and grandpa. My mom had my name picked out before d&l....boy: jacob michael, girl: melissa danielle. then i made my arrival (3 wks late) on my great gpa's bday. my mom decided then that since i was born on my great gpa's bday that she wanted to also honor my great gma by naming me melissa anne. :)

  4. Hey Mandy, just wanted to say good luck with the names because I know how hard it was for us, both times. Avery was on my list for a long time, and then we saw a sign by our house that said Avery Forest Preserve, so we decided to go with it. Her middle name is Josephine after Lenny's grandmother. Elliot Grace wasn't named after anyone, and we didn't decide on it until someone came in the hospital room wanting to know what to put on the birth certificate :) Slightly last minute. We didn't have to worry about boy names, which I think are so much harder than girl names! Good luck, and I can't wait to hear what you choose :)

  5. Well babe I definately get the unfortunate issue of being an educator and getting names ruined but I've also gotten a name I like from a student who was a doll. Rylan's middle name Jace was picked from a student that I could have taken home and raised as my own. Sooo adorable. Finley's name came way before I was pregnant during fertility treatment. I seem to have photographic or auditory memory because with most of my kids, I seem to have seen or heard their names somewhere but can't remember where. Adair is Fin's middle name and I got that from a baby name book. Rylan's name came randomly and his middle name from a past student. Jenner came randomly too and his middle name is Steven from Jered's dad who had passed away right before I got pregnant. Truett Lawson (both names came randomly) is our last. I'm not totally big into family names unless you are going to share the wealth with all your kids just so no one is left out but Jered insisted on his dad's name for a middle name for Jenner mostly because his passing was so recent. I will tell you that with each of my kids, I seemed to have a dominant assurance of one gender's name over the other and that always ended up being what we had so if you are more sure of your girl name over your boy, I'm going with you having a girl :) We shall see...can't wait hun!!!

  6. We definitely had an easy time the first time around. I find I like names I hear on movies, television or that I've read in books. Avery was from Jerry Maguire, and although the character wasn't the most pleasant, I love Kelly Preston. Her middle name, Lucille, is after her great grandmother that passed away. So, most of the first names we've considered are from a movie or tv show, but the middle names will always be to honor someone in our family. Good luck- we are having an awful time coming up with another girl name! :)

  7. We had Calla's name picked out right before I got pregnant. I teach freshmen, but I was looking at a junior roster for an ACT prep class that I was possibly going to teach, and I came across the name Calla on the roster. I'd never seen or heard the name before and immediately thought it sounded so pretty, unique, sweet. Plus our wedding flower was the calla lily and I loved how the name (although not the main reason) would also be able to reflect that meaning. I mentioned it to Eric right away, and he loved it too. Very easy! And then later we thought Grace sounded pretty as a middle name to Calla, so we made it official. Kept the name a secret until the day she was born. :) By the way, I never did get to meet or see the Calla (student) at my school who inspired the name. Good luck deciding, Mandy!

  8. Well, I (obviously) haven't had any children yet, but when Aaron and I first began dating we tossed around some names that just came immediately to us for some reason. (Btw, my #1 girl name is a little similar to Avery. Of course, it would be considering it's between us! ;) Love that about us ya little freak.) But, we'll wait and see when/if we're lucky enough for the time to come before discussing more seriously. We did notice how obvious both our girl and boy name came and how immediate our love of them were. Just like when we met...we just knew and it clicked. Hope we get the chance to use them. Good luck with choosing, and enjoy the process!!! Love you! ~Stacey Webb

  10. I'm not sure if I've ever told you how the kids' names came about or not, so if I've already shared, just disregard:) I fell in love with the name Gage (and the little blond actor) in the movie Pet Cemetery...I know, terrible choice of movie, but remember I was in high school. Gage has two middle names; Michael, after one of my best friends, and David, after my uncle. Kyleigh's name is from the little girl that I had dreams about , so I knew that I had to name her that, no choice. Her middle name, Elizabeth, was Andy's choice and I liked the combo. Kole's name is from a baby that I babysat for from the time that he was a newborn, until he was a toddler...I just loved him:) His middle name, Andrew, is after Andy, of course. My mom has told me that the whole time that she was pregnant with me that she was going to name me Sunshine....Can you imagine?!?! She said that once she laid eyes on me that Jennifer Lyn popped into her head and that was it.

  11. Jenny, I did know about Kyleigh's...the funny thing is, I remember hearing about the dreams and name long before she was ever conceived :) I didn't know about Kole's...and once you mentioned "Pet Cemetery" I recalled Gage. Thanks for sharing!!
